New data on Zimbabwe has shown a considerable increase in mobile subscriptions over the past years, starting flatly at zero and significantly increasing after 1998.
This was also the same period that telecommunication company Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, was founded.
Trends have shown a significant increase since then, with more people now subscribed to a cellular network. This also calls on the government to improve network connectivity in remote areas to close the digital divide.
Growth has been driven by cheaper handsets, wider network coverage and the increasing role of mobile services in financial transactions, particularly mobile money platforms.
Despite the progress, challenges remain in extending reliable connectivity to remote rural areas, where coverage gaps limit access to digital services.
Analysts say improving infrastructure in underserved communities is crucial to closing the digital divide and ensuring equal access to communication and information across Zimbabwe.
