Number of migrants living in every country in 1990, 2010 and 2024

THE number of foreigners living in Zimbabwe has been decreasing over the past years compared to other regional neighbours, new data by the United Nations has shown.

According to data on the international migrant stock by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the number of migrants in the country has been decreasing in the years 1990, 2010 and 2024.

International migration stock is defined as the number of persons who are considered international migrants at a given point in time.

A falling migrant stock could be based on various reasons, which include;

•Fewer people were immigrating to Zimbabwe during that period compared to earlier times.

•International migrants who were living in Zimbabwe chose to leave the country and move to other countries.

•Economic opportunities elsewhere, political instability, or other personal factors.

•Some international migrants who had previously moved to Zimbabwe might have returned to their countries of origin.

It is important to note that various migrants have left the country due to the country’s worsening economic woes at the turn of the century. These worsened in 2008 after the hyper-inflationary period.
