DATA: Zimbabwe’s HIV Expenditure from all funding sources (2005-2023)

DATA on Zimbabwe’s HIV/AIDS funding has shown that the country has been mainly relying on foreign aid, with domestic public funding dwindling between 2017 and 2023.

The data shows the country had an international funding dividend alone in 2023.

In the same period, Zimbabwe, with help from PEPFAR and USAID, reached the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) target dubbed 95-95-95.

This is whereby 95% of people living with HIV should be diagnosed, while 95% of those living with HIV should be on ART medication, and another 95% should achieve viral suppression.

The country has, over the years, made strides in fighting HIV, with 1.2 million Zimbabweans living with HIV receiving treatment through the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) program.

However, with funding uncertainty, the country ought to ramp up health spending to safeguard gains in ending HIV/AIDS.
