Data: Deaths from diabetes, Zimbabwe (2000 to 2021)

New data from the World Health Organisation (WHO) has revealed a dramatic and troubling increase in deaths from diabetes in Zimbabwe, with the annual toll quadrupling since the turn of the century.

According to the WHO’s latest Global Health Estimates, which compile and analyse global mortality trends from 2000 to 2021, the number of Zimbabweans dying from diabetes each year has surged from approximately 1,000 in 2000 to around 4,000 in 2021.

The figures, drawn from national vital registration and UN data, show a near-consistent upward climb over the two-decade period.

These estimates are a critical tool for health policy, designed to guide informed decision-making on resource allocation.

The stark trend observed in Zimbabwe highlights a significant and growing challenge in managing a non-communicable disease that is often preventable and manageable with adequate healthcare.

The escalating death toll points to a pressing need for strengthened public health interventions in the country to curb a crisis that is claiming thousands of lives each year.
